$Election Cake 🇺🇸 Did you know that Election Day used to be celebrated like a holiday in the 18th and 19th century? People would travel far distances to cast their votes and there would be parades and balls to celebrate the occasion. This cake was served to voters as they were waiting for the ballots to be counted (and some say to incentivize voting). The first written recipe for election cake appears in the first American cookbook, American Cookery, in 1796 (3rd picture). Note the quantity of the ingredients! Election cakes are sometimes called \"Hartford Cakes\" or \"Hartford Election Cakes\" because voters would flock to Hartford, Connecticut for these cakes!
